What Causes Us During Hot and Dry Weather in Malaysia

The El Nino weather phenomenon is here in Malaysia since February. The continuous hot and dry weather is causing some health hazard to us, especially heat stroke and upper respiratory tract infection such as asthma and conjunctivitis.

Condition like dehydration and heat stroke are haunting us. People tend to sweat a lot and lose the necessary body fluids during the hot weather. You will feel tired easily and become less energetic if stay in outdoor for quite a while.

Dehydration is a kind of adrenal fatigue. The common symptoms of adrenal fatigue are as below:

  • Cravings for sugar

  • Cravings for salt on food when you eat

  • Feel dehydrated and thirsty and require plenty of water

  • Difficulty falling asleep at night, sleep lightly or wake early or often

  • Difficulty relaxing, nervous, anxious or hyperactive

  • General exhaustion

Dehydration could lead to more health complications especially those who are suffering from illness. Some surprising dehydration signs include fever, bad breath and dizziness.

Other health effects caused by heat wave are as shown below:

1) Heat edema - transient swelling of hands, feet and ankles due to enhanced water retention

2) Heat rash - maculopapular rash accompanied by acute inflammation and blocked sweat ducts

3) Heat cramps - severe and involuntary spasms of the large muscle groups used in strenuous exercise.

4) Heat syncope - related to heat exposure that produces orthostatic hypotension. The hypotension can precipitate a fainting episode.

Climate changes make weather patterns difficult to forecast. Extreme hot weather could also cause other problems, such as water crisis, forest fires and haze. Agriculture is affected if lack of water volume. Forest got burnt and leads to haze. All these hazards cause biodiversity loss and pollution.

Now our government had urged us to take precautions avoiding dengue fever. This is because the hot and dry weather would cause the life cycle of Aedes mosquitoes to be reduced to only 7 days, and this lead to an increase in mosquito population. The spreading of dengue virus will be more rampant.

As saying goes, prepare your umbrella before it rains.

There are several issues occurred due to the extreme hot weather.

What we can do for now is take preventive measure and keep your body healthy.
